


Introduction
“Misty rain over the South Mountain opens a painting book”, which is the praise to the South Mountain by Mi Fu, a famous calligrapher and painter in the Northern Song Dynasty. Zhenjiang South Mountain Scenic Area is indeed a marvellous destination. It is a national 4A-level tourist site, a national forest park and a famous provincial scenic spot with beautiful natural landscape and rich cultural heritage. Only 2 kilometers away from the city center and known as “South Mountain under Misty Rain” and “City Forest”, it has a total area of 13.14 square kilometers, covering Wenyuan (Bamboo Forest), Zhaoyin, Huanghe Mountain, Moji Mountain, Lianhua Cave and other scenic spots, all of which are quiet, simple, elegant, bright and beautiful.
Scholars and celebrities of all dynasties have left their footprints and masterpieces. Liu Yu, emperor Wu of the Liu Song Dynasty, once secretly settled down here, farming, collecting herbs, cutting firewood, digging springs and shooting boas. Xiao Tong, Crown Prince of the Liang Dynasty, invited talents from all over the nation and compiled “Selections of Refined Literature”, the first collection of poems and essays on Chinese literature, in Zenghua Pavilion. Liu Xie of the Southern Dynasty wrote “The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons”. Mi Fu and Mi Youren, the great calligraphers of the Northern Song Dynasty, lived here for 40 years and created the painting style of “Mishi Cloud Mountains”. Dai Yong, a famous sculptor and musician in the Southern Dynasties, declined the emperor’s edict, lived in seclusion in the mountains and composed music pieces such as “Guangling”, “Youxian” and “Zhixi”. Zhou Dunyi studied here and wrote “Love of Water-lily”. In addition, many other famous artists such as Su Dongpo, Wang Anshi, Zeng Gong and Luo Binwang, visited this place and left their precious masterpieces.
The South Mountain has a good natural ecology, with green mountains, lush forests and bamboos, running springs and streams. There are thousands of acres of forests, hundreds of acres of orchards and tea gardens, over 360 kinds of trees and flowers, and more than 80 kinds of birds and animals. It is full of historic sites, including Zenghua Pavilion, Reading Platform, Jizu Hall, Tingli Mountain House, Hupao Spring, Lupao Spring, Lin Gong Spring, Yijiang Pavilion, Yurui Pavilion, Rusi Pavilion, Wanguchangqing Pavilion, and Niaowai Pavilion, Wenxin Pavilion, Xuelin House and Lion Grottoes. Visitors here have tea to drink, flowers to enjoy, fruits to pick, caves to explore, and birds to listen to. It is a good place for study, travel, leisure, vacation and fitness.
