Introduction
Founded in 1958, Zhenjiang Museum is a national first-class museum. Located at the foot of Yuntai Mountain and adjacent to the ancient Xijin Ferry Street, it is a comprehensive local history museum and a National AAAA-Level scenic tourist area, praised as a “poeticized art palace”.
The museum comprises three main sections: the Former Site of the British Consulate, the Ancient History Exhibition Hall (Building 6), and the Modern History Exhibition Hall (Building 8). The Former British Consulate, built in 1864, consists of five Western-style buildings renowned for their distinctive architectural character, and is now designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit. The Ancient History Exhibition Hall, opened to the public in 2005, features five permanent exhibitions: Bronze Ware of Wu Culture, Exquisite Ceramics Through the Ages, Fine Gold and Silver Artifacts, Masterpieces of Ancient Craftsmanship, and Sweet Dew Memories—Buddhist Culture in Zhenjiang. These exhibitions narrate the 3,000-year history and culture of Zhenjiang through an approach that makes cultural relics alive. The Modern History Exhibition Hall, officially opened in 2021, houses the permanent exhibition Torrent—Zhenjiang’s Modern History along with a temporary exhibition space. Torrent traces the city’s urban history, with a focus on its revolutionary past, and displays over 730 historical photographs and 413 revolutionary artifacts. It showcases the historical contributions made by the people of Zhenjiang toward national independence and people’s liberation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China from 1840 to 1949.
Zhenjiang Museum boasts a rich collection of nearly 30,000 cultural relics and treasures, with highlights including bronze ware from the Wu Kingdom during the Western Zhou and Spring and Autumn periods, celadon porcelain from the Six Dynasties, gold and silver artifacts of the Tang Dynasty, as well as calligraphy and painting works from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Among these, the Western Zhou bronze Zun vessel with phoenix patterns, the Tang Dynasty gilded silver cylindrical wine utensil set with a turtle-carried analects design, and the Sarira (sacred relics) of Sakyamuni Buddha, all of which are both domestically and internationally acclaimed.
The museum is committed to providing first-class services to the public. To this end, the Visitor Service Center offers a range of amenities such as ticket booking, guided tours, and a leisure tea lounge. Additionally, the museum features a diverse collection of cultural and creative products allowing visitors to fulfill the wish of “taking the museum home”.
Today, Zhenjiang Museum stands as a perfect blend of antiquity and modernity, Eastern tradition and Western influence, human ingenuity and natural serenity. With these walls, visitors feel free to trace the footsteps of history, immerse themselves in cultural brilliance, and discover the appeal of the city. Welcome to Zhenjiang Museum!
